Renoir, Pierre-Auguste |
The Gypsy girl was also painted whileRenoirwas a guest of the Berards at Wargemont, and he used the same girl as a model in Mussel-fishers at Berneval, which he exhibited at the 1880 Salon. Paintings of picturesque little girls in rags were commonplace at the Salon at this time. He concentrates on her very appealing face, barely sketching in the hands and back-ground, and narrowly avoids a hollow sentimentality.
This was probably one of the first ofRenoir’s paintings to be bought by Charles Ephrussi. Ephrussi died in 1905 but we do not know when the painting left his collection. Later it belonged to Bernheim-Jeune, and between the wars it was in the possession of the dealer Paul Rosenberg. |
