BACK TO THE ARTIST   Gypsy Girl, 1879           Details     Description     Artist Renoir, Pierre-Auguste The Gypsy girl was also painted while3„4Renoir3„4was a guest of the Berards at Wargemont, and he used the same girl as a model in Mussel-fishers at Berneval, which he exhibited at the 1880 Salon. Paintings of picturesque little girls in rags were commonplace at the Salon at this time. He concentrates on her very appealing face, barely sketching in the hands and back-ground, and narrowly avoids a hollow sentimentality. This was probably one of the first of3„4Renoir’s paintings to be bought by Charles Ephrussi. Ephrussi died in 1905 but we do not know when the painting left his collection.
